About This Game

A cooperative word game where partners give one-word clues to help each other find secret agents. Work together against a timer and limited mistakes.

How to Play

  1. Lay out 25 word cards in a 5x5 grid
  2. Each player has a key card showing which words are agents (green), bystanders, and assassins
  3. Your key cards are different — some agents for you are assassins for your partner
  4. On your turn, give a one-word clue and a number (how many words it relates to)
  5. Partner guesses by touching word cards:
  • Correct agent: mark it green, keep guessing
  • Bystander: turn ends, but no penalty
  • Assassin: you both lose immediately
  1. You have 9 turns total (combined) to find all 15 agents
  2. Both sides of the key must be covered — cooperative win

History & Background

Codenames: Duet evolved from the wildly successful Codenames, created by Vlad Chuppy in 2015. While the original game thrived in larger groups with competing teams, designer Chuppy and Czech Games Edition recognized a growing demand for cooperative gameplay and two-player experiences. Duet launched in 2017 as a brilliant reimagining that transformed the competitive word-association game into an intimate cooperative challenge.

The genius of Duet lies in its asymmetrical key cards—a mechanic that creates genuine tension even with perfect communication. Unlike standard Codenames, each player sees a different board reality, making information sharing dangerous. This design choice earned Duet recognition as one of the best two-player board games and introduced thousands of couples and gaming duos to cooperative word puzzles. The game became particularly popular among casual players seeking quality time together without competitive conflict.

Duet's success spawned multiple variants and expanded the Codenames franchise into a broader gaming universe. Today, it stands as a masterclass in cooperative game design, proving that partnership doesn't require identical information—sometimes the most rewarding victories come from navigating uncertainty together. The game's 15-30 minute playtime made it accessible for regular game nights, while its 2/5 complexity ensured newcomers could jump in immediately without losing the strategic depth that keeps veterans returning.
