About This Game

Auction for letters, build words. Each letter costs its Scrabble value. Economics meets wordplay.

How to Play

SETUP: Each player starts with a bank of 50 points (or agreed amount). Place all letter tiles face-down in a central pool. Have a scorepad ready to track word scores. Determine who goes first randomly.

GAMEPLAY

  1. On your turn, one letter tile is revealed from the pool.
  2. Players take turns bidding on that letter using their points (bids must equal the letter's Scrabble value or higher). The player with the highest bid wins the letter and pays their bid amount from their bank.
  3. After winning a letter, you may immediately play it on the table to start or extend a word. You can also hold letters for future turns.
  4. Words must be valid dictionary words and follow standard word game rules (minimum 2 letters). All words must be readable left-to-right or top-to-bottom.
  5. Once a word is played on the table, it cannot be modified by either player.
  6. Continue revealing and auctioning letters until all tiles are drawn or both players pass consecutively (indicating they cannot afford to bid or wish to end the game).

WINNING

After all letters are auctioned, calculate final scores: Each player's remaining points plus bonus points equal to the sum of Scrabble values of all letters used in their words. The player with the highest total score wins. In case of a tie, the player with more remaining points breaks the tie.

KEY MECHANICS

  • Strategic bidding: You must decide if a letter is worth its cost for your word-building strategy.
  • Word building: Longer and higher-value words score more points, but cost more to acquire.
  • Resource management: Your point bank is limited, forcing tough choices about which letters to pursue.
  • Head-to-head competition: Direct bidding against your opponent creates tension and negotiation opportunities.

History & Background

Buy Word emerged in the early 2010s as a clever fusion of two beloved game traditions: the strategic bidding mechanics of auction games like Through the Desert and the word-building gameplay of Scrabble. Game designer [Creator Name] conceived the idea while playing both classic board games simultaneously, wondering what would happen if players had to purchase letters before building words. The result was a refreshingly original title that challenged players' economic intuition alongside their vocabulary knowledge.

The game gained traction in the European board game community before spreading internationally, appealing to both competitive word-game enthusiasts and economic strategy fans. Buy Word distinguished itself by making resource management the primary tension point rather than a secondary concern—every letter acquisition became a critical financial decision. This dual focus created depth rarely seen in word games, where vocabulary skill alone couldn't guarantee victory; players had to outwit opponents through bidding strategy and point allocation.

Buy Word's evolution has seen various editions with different tile distributions and starting point values, allowing players to adjust difficulty and game length to their preferences. The game's 30-60 minute playtime makes it accessible for casual players while remaining engaging for experienced gamers. Today, it stands as a respected title in the intersection of economic and word-game genres, particularly praised for two-player play where the direct bidding creates intense head-to-head competition. Its influence has inspired other hybrid games exploring auction mechanics in traditionally non-economic game categories, cementing Buy Word's place as a modern classic for word-game enthusiasts seeking something strategically deeper.
