🃏 Arboretum card game

About This Game

Plant trees in your arboretum. But you must hold cards to score them. Painful decisions.

How to Play

SETUP: Shuffle the deck and place it face-down between players. Each player draws 8 cards into their hand. One card is drawn from the deck and placed face-up as the discard pile starter.

GAMEPLAY: Players alternate turns. On your turn: (1) Play one card from your hand face-up in front of you, building your personal arboretum by arranging trees in rows by species; (2) Take one card either from the top of the draw deck or from the top of the discard pile; (3) Discard one card from your hand face-up onto the discard pile. You must always have 8 cards in hand after your turn completes.

TREE PLANTING: Trees of the same species must be planted in a single row, arranged in ascending numerical order. Each species can only have one row. Plan carefully—once a tree is played, it cannot be moved.

SCORING PHASE: When both players have played all their cards (8 rounds total), scoring begins. For each tree species you have planted, score points equal to the highest-numbered card in that species' row, BUT only if you hold the card that matches that species' lowest number in your hand. This creates the core tension: you must keep low cards to score high cards, limiting what else you can plant.

WINNING: The player with the most points wins. Two-player variant plays identically to the base game—no adaptation needed. The reduced player count intensifies the strategic card-drafting decisions, as there's greater control over which cards enter the discard pile.

KEY MECHANIC: The discard pile becomes crucial—it's your only way to influence which cards your opponent can access, and they control what goes there too. This creates a satisfying push-and-pull dynamic perfect for head-to-head play.

History & Background

Arboretum was designed by Dan Cassar and first published in 2015, quickly establishing itself as a modern classic in the tabletop card game community. The game's elegant design struck a chord with players seeking deeper strategy in a compact package, earning widespread acclaim for its deceptively simple ruleset masking profound strategic depth. Despite its garden-themed aesthetic, Arboretum is fundamentally a game about tough choices and calculated risk—themes that resonated strongly with both casual and hardcore gaming audiences.

The game's genius lies in how it transforms the act of scoring into a source of tension rather than simple accumulation. Cassar crafted a mechanic where success requires holding low-value cards hostage in your hand specifically to unlock high-value scoring opportunities, creating a natural resource conflict that defines the entire experience. This "hand management as strategy" approach influenced numerous card games released in subsequent years, cementing Arboretum's place in gaming history.

For two-player enthusiasts, Arboretum became particularly celebrated as an exemplar of asymmetrical tension in head-to-head play. The discard pile transforms into a psychological battlefield where players must constantly decide: do I discard cards my opponent might want, or cards I fear they'll access? This dynamic proved ideal for the two-player format, where every decision directly impacts your single opponent's options. The game's 20-30 minute playtime and zero-luck-required mechanics made it a fixture in competitive gaming circles, consistently ranking among the best two-player card games and demonstrating that beautiful strategy doesn't require complex rules or lengthy playtime.
