What You'll Need
About This Game
Push your luck as a zombie hunting brains. Roll dice to collect brains, but three shotgun blasts and you're out.
How to Play
- Shake and draw 3 random dice from the cup (don't peek at colors)
- Roll all 3 dice. Three possible results:
- Brain: set aside (you scored a brain!)
- Footsteps: set aside (victim escaped)
- Shotgun blast: set aside (you got shot)
- After rolling, choose: STOP and bank your brains, or PUSH YOUR LUCK
- To continue: keep the footstep dice, draw new dice to total 3, roll again
- Three shotgun blasts = busted! Lose ALL brains from this turn
- If you stop safely, add brains to your running total
- Dice colors indicate danger: green (safe), yellow (medium), red (dangerous)
- First to 13 brains wins (finish the round so everyone gets equal turns)
History & Background
Zombie Dice was created by Steve Jackson Games and first released in 2010, designed by Mike Selinker. The game emerged during a golden age of accessible party games that prioritized quick gameplay and social interaction over complex mechanics. Selinker's design brilliantly captured the zombie gaming trend that was sweeping popular culture in the late 2000s, translating the undead theme into a simple yet engaging push-your-luck mechanic that appealed to both casual players and serious gamers alike.
The game's elegance lies in its minimalist approach to risk management. While the zombie theme provides thematic flavor, the core mechanic of deciding when to bank your winnings versus risking everything taps into fundamental human psychology around gambling and probability. This push-your-luck system became influential in tabletop gaming, inspiring numerous other titles that used similar risk-reward mechanics. The color-coded dice—green, yellow, and red—create an intuitive visual language that communicates danger levels without requiring extensive rulebook consultation.
Zombie Dice found particular success as a two-player game despite being marketed for 2-6 players. The head-to-head format creates intense, direct competition where players can observe and react to their opponent's risk-taking in real time. The 13-brain winning condition ensures games finish quickly, making it perfect for multiple rounds during game nights. Over more than a decade, the game has maintained steady popularity, spawning expansions and themed versions while remaining fundamentally unchanged—a testament to how well Selinker solved the design challenge of creating a compelling, easy-to-learn game that still offers meaningful decisions and memorable moments of tension.
