What You'll Need

🎲 Qwixx game (dice and scoresheets)

About This Game

Roll dice and mark off numbers on your scoresheet. Lock rows to score big. Simple and addictive.

How to Play

  1. Each player gets a score sheet with 4 colored rows (red, yellow ascending; green, blue descending)
  2. Active player rolls 6 dice (2 white + 4 colored)
  3. Active player announces white dice sum — ALL players may mark that number in any row
  4. Active player may ALSO combine one white + one colored die and mark that sum in the matching color row
  5. Numbers must be marked left to right (you can skip numbers, but can't go back)
  6. To lock (complete) a row: must have 5+ marks and mark the final number. That row is closed for everyone
  7. If active player can't/won't mark anything: penalty (-5 points)
  8. Game ends when 2 rows are locked or someone gets 4 penalties
  9. Score per row: 1 mark=1pt, 2=3, 3=6, 4=10... (triangular numbers)
  10. Subtract penalties. Highest total wins

History & Background

Qwixx was designed by Steffen Benndorf and published by Nürnberger Spielkartenverlag in 2012, quickly becoming a modern classic in the roll-and-write genre. The game's elegant simplicity—combining dice rolling with strategic number selection—captured international audiences and earned widespread critical acclaim, winning multiple awards including the À la carte Nominierungsliste. Its success sparked a renaissance of roll-and-write games, a category that had been relatively dormant since the 1980s.

What makes Qwixx particularly brilliant is how it balances luck and agency. While dice determine available numbers, players control the sequencing and row selection, creating meaningful decisions despite random outcomes. The locking mechanism adds a push-your-luck element: committing to close a row scores points but removes future opportunities. This tension between greed and caution makes every roll consequential.

The game's cultural impact extends beyond tabletop circles. Its accessibility—teaching in under two minutes, playing in 15—made it a gateway game for non-gamers and a staple at casual game nights worldwide. Numerous expansions have followed, including Qwixx Big Box and Qwixx: Das Würfelspiel, yet the original remains beloved for its purity. For two players specifically, Qwixx creates intimate, head-to-head competition where reading your opponent's strategy becomes as important as dice luck.
