What You'll Need
About This Game
Roll dice to collect worm tiles. Bust and lose your tile - or steal from opponents!
How to Play
SETUP: Shuffle the worm tiles (numbered 21-36) and place them face-up in numerical order on the table. Each player starts with no tiles. Place all six dice where both players can access them.
GAMEPLAY: On your turn, roll all six dice. You must set aside at least one die showing a number or the worm symbol. Continue rolling the remaining dice and set aside at least one more die each roll. You may stop at any time and score the tiles corresponding to your dice total.
SCORING: Add up all dice you've set aside. If your total matches a worm tile number, you claim that tile. If you bust (cannot set aside a die or your total doesn't match any available tile), you lose one of your previously won tiles to your opponent, then your turn ends. If no tiles are available at your number, you also bust.
TILE STEALING: When you successfully claim a tile, you may steal one tile from your opponent with a lower number. This creates exciting risk-reward decisions in two-player matches.
WINNING: The game ends when only one worm tile remains on the table. The player with the most tiles wins. In case of a tie, the player with the highest-numbered tile wins.
TWO-PLAYER ADAPTATION: Pickomino works excellently with two players. The traditional game supports 2-4 players, but with only two competitors, the tile-stealing mechanic becomes more strategic and personal. Each player's decisions have greater impact on their opponent's score, and the race to claim high-value tiles is more intense. The smaller player count also means faster turns and less downtime between your rolls.
History & Background
Pickomino, originally released as 'Pickomino' by Dirk Henn in 1997, is a compact push-your-luck dice game published by Zoch Verlag. The game's simple premise—rolling dice to claim numbered tiles while risking bust—became an instant classic in the modern board game renaissance of the late 1990s. Its elegant design combines accessible mechanics with genuine tension, making it a gateway game for many new players entering the hobby.
The game gained significant popularity in Germany before spreading internationally, eventually being published in multiple languages and editions. Pickomino's core mechanic of simultaneous risk and reward made it a favorite at game nights and tournaments, particularly praised for its scalability across different player counts. The tile-stealing mechanism creates a unique push-back against leading players, preventing runaway victories and keeping all players engaged until the final turn.
Over the decades, Pickomino has remained largely unchanged, a testament to its design quality. The game has seen various editions and artwork updates, but the fundamental gameplay remains true to the original vision. It's frequently included in 'best dice games' lists and is often recommended as a perfect introduction to modern board gaming. Today, Pickomino stands as a timeless example of how simple rules and clever mechanics can create compelling, repeatable gameplay that appeals to both casual players and serious enthusiasts.
