About This Game

HORSE rotates through five poker variants in a fixed order: Hold'em, Omaha Hi-Lo, Razz, Seven-Card Stud, and Seven-Card Stud Eight-or-Better (Hi-Lo). Each variant switches after a set number of hands or a full orbit of the dealer button. It's the poker player's poker game.

How to Play

**How it works:** Players cycle through five poker games in order:

  1. **H** — Texas Hold'em (community cards, best 5 of 7)
  2. **O** — Omaha Hi-Lo (must use exactly 2 of 4 hole cards, pot split between best high and best qualifying low)
  3. **R** — Razz (seven-card stud played for low only, aces are low)
  4. **S** — Seven-Card Stud (no community cards, 3 down + 4 up, best high hand)
  5. **E** — Seven-Card Stud Eight-or-Better (stud hi-lo split, low hand must be 8 or better to qualify)

**For 2 players:** Play limit betting structure. Switch games every 8-10 hands or when the dealer button completes a full orbit. Each variant uses its standard rules.

**Winning:** The player with the most chips at the end of a predetermined number of full rotations wins. Typical home games run 3-5 full HORSE cycles.

History & Background

HORSE first appeared in high-stakes cash games in Las Vegas during the 1970s, when seasoned poker pros got bored playing a single variant. The format was added to the World Series of Poker in 2002 as a $10,000 buy-in event. It remains the gold standard for testing all-around poker skill because you can't hide a weak spot across five different games.
