About This Game

Dice combat game. Each character has different dice. Capture opponent's dice to win.

How to Play

SETUP: Each player selects a character button (or receives one randomly) and takes the corresponding dice set. Players place their dice in front of them—these represent their starting army. Each player also tracks a reserve pile of dice.

GAMEPLAY

  1. Players alternate turns. On your turn, you must perform exactly one die action.
  2. ATTACKING: Select one of your dice and declare a target opponent die of equal or lower value. Both dice are rolled.
  3. If your die shows a higher number than your opponent's die, you capture their die and add it to your reserve.
  4. If your die shows equal or lower, your die is captured and removed from play. Your opponent may add it to their reserve (for dice with special abilities) or set it aside.
  5. SPECIAL ABILITIES: Some dice have unique powers (Growth: add pips, Poison: reduce opponent's die, Swing: change die type, etc.). Check your character card for abilities and apply them when rolling.
  6. RESERVE DICE: Between turns, players may use their reserve dice to bring captured dice back into play, following their character's specific rules.
  7. PRESSING: On your turn, instead of attacking, you may "press"—increase one of your dice's value by 1 (maximum value is always your original die's max).
  8. CONTINUE: Play alternates until one player has no dice remaining in play AND in reserve.

WINNING: The player with dice remaining when their opponent has none wins immediately. Games typically last 10-20 minutes due to the fast elimination pace.

ADAPTATION NOTE: Button Men is designed for 2+ players. Two-player games use the standard rules above with no modifications—the game was built for head-to-head competition.

History & Background

Button Men emerged from the creative mind of Andrew Looney in the 1990s as part of the broader Looney Labs game design philosophy that emphasized simple rules with deep strategic gameplay. Originally released in 1999, the game took inspiration from the tradition of dice games and poker, distilling combat mechanics into their purest form. Looney Labs packaged the game with distinctive character buttons—hence the name—each featuring unique dice configurations and special abilities that gave players vastly different playstyles and strategic options. This innovation transformed Button Men from a simple dice-rolling exercise into a game with remarkable replayability and character-driven gameplay.

The game's cultural significance lies in its elegant design philosophy and its role within the indie board game community. Button Men proved that a game could be learned in minutes but offer competitive depth that appealed to both casual players and tournament competitors. The game's visual identity—the decorative buttons featuring illustrations of diverse characters—became iconic in tabletop gaming circles, influencing how designers approached thematic presentation. Tournaments and online communities formed around Button Men throughout the 2000s, establishing it as a respected competitive title despite its accessible ruleset.

Over the decades, Button Men has evolved through multiple expansions and editions, introducing new characters with increasingly creative special abilities while maintaining the core mechanics that made it accessible. The game transitioned to digital platforms, expanding its reach beyond physical board game spaces. Today, Button Men remains a beloved choice for quick, satisfying two-player encounters, celebrated for proving that meaningful game experiences need not require hours of play or complex rule books. Its legacy continues to inspire designers seeking the sweet spot between simplicity and strategic depth.
