What You'll Need
About This Game
Roll dice to collect sets of books. Outbid opponents in this monastic library theme.
How to Play
SETUP: Each player sits opposite one another. Shuffle the dice and place them in the center play area. Set aside a scoring pad and pen. Determine who goes first randomly.
GAMEPLAY
- On your turn, roll all available dice in the center pool.
- After rolling, you must immediately claim one die showing any value. Place it in front of you—this die is now yours and cannot be taken.
- Your opponent then claims one die from the remaining rolled dice.
- Continue alternating turns, with each player claiming one die per turn, until all dice have been claimed.
- Once all dice are claimed, proceed to the auction phase: Players use their collected dice values as currency (bid amounts). The player with the highest bid gets first pick of available books from the library display. Books have point values ranging from 1-5 points. Alternate selections until all books are distributed.
- Ties in bidding are broken by who claimed their dice first during the rolling phase.
WINNING CONDITIONS
After all books are auctioned and distributed, calculate your total points from the books you've acquired. The player with the highest total score wins.
NOTES FOR 2-PLAYER ADAPTATION
Biblios Dice was originally designed for 2-4 players. In 2-player format, the game sharpens significantly: every die choice directly impacts your opponent's options, making each decision crucial. The auction phase becomes a tense head-to-head negotiation. With only two players, luck from dice rolls matters less—strategy dominates. Both players must carefully plan which dice combinations will best support their book acquisition strategy.
History & Background
Biblios Dice is a streamlined successor to the original Biblios board game, first published in 2007 by designer Michael Schacht. The original game featured a unique auction mechanism where players managed cards representing different book categories. Biblios Dice, released several years later, distilled the core auction gameplay into a faster, dice-driven experience while maintaining the charming monastic library theme that made the original appealing.
The game draws thematically from historical monastic libraries, particularly medieval scriptoriums where monks painstakingly copied and collected manuscripts. This cultural backdrop gives the game depth beyond mere mechanics—players are constructing collections of knowledge, mirroring the real-world passion of monks and scholars throughout history.
Biblios Dice succeeded because it solved a problem with its predecessor: playtime and complexity. By moving to dice and eliminating the card drafting layer, the game became more accessible while retaining the satisfying push-your-luck and auction elements that made Biblios special. The 2-player experience is particularly refined, as the direct competition and simplified player count create intense, tactical gameplay where every decision matters. The game has since become a staple recommendation for players seeking a quick, elegant dice game with genuine strategic depth.
